The Subversion of Democracy in Our Time

“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” (Abraham Lincoln)

“Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, well, you just can’t fool me twice.” (George W. Bush)

Coulda fooled us.

The Bush Administration, using 9/11 as a pretext, has greatly accelerated the subversion of democracy that began with McCarthyism in the 1950s, and that has repeatedly emerged in American society to threaten individual liberties, political expression, and the U.S. Constitution. Each generation has had to resist the effort of a few to consolidate power in order to dominate both American society and the rest of the world.

Our Invitation

We are calling for statements, evidence, analysis, and the indictment of the present administration on both domestic and international grounds. We are asking all public figures and ordinary citizens to declare where they stand on the most fundamental of national issues: the corruption of politics, the abuse of power, the threat to democracy.

We invite you to submit papers and comments to this collection at submissions@subversionofdemocracy.org. You can also contribute to this site by commenting on our posts or becoming an author. We will also publish interviews, reviews, and articles from other sources. If you’d like to contribute in any way to the project, please register and provide your comments, or email us at comments@subversionofdemocracy.org.

Who We Are

This project is supported by the National Working Group, a subcommittee of the Bernards Township Democratic Committee. We have no particular standing to initiate this public conversation other than that of ordinary citizens. We cannot bring suit against the government in court to protest this erosion of our constitutional protections; but we can bring suit in the court of public opinion. If enough people agree that the present regime in Washington needs changing, we will prevail.

You can show your support best by speaking out, and inviting your friends and neighbors to do so as well. Together, our voices will restore our sanity, our community, and our political will.

As part of our fundraising efforts, we have joined several affiliate programs. You can help us by purchasing books and other products through the very occasional links we post in connection with our articles and reviews. All proceeds go to the Bernards Township Democratic Committee, which is sponsoring this project to restore constitutional democracy in the United States.
